The ISO Public Protection Classification (PPC) program, administered by Verisk, evaluates the fire protection capabilities of communities across the United States. Ratings range from Class 1, representing exemplary fire protection, to Class 10, indicating that the area's fire suppression program does not meet ISO’s minimum criteria. These ratings are based on several key factors, including the quality of the local fire department, emergency communications systems, water supply availability, and efforts in community risk reduction such as fire prevention and public education. A lower class number typically means better fire protection and can lead to reduced property insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses. In Jackson County, the fire grading districts have earned the following ISO ratings: Escatawpa holds a Class 6, while Central, Latimer, Northeast, Southeast (Forts Lake), and St. Martin each maintain a Class 7. These classifications reflect the county’s ongoing commitment to improving emergency services and protecting public safety.
